About
Fifty years ago on the 15th of July ,1941, a great expectation of the people living north of Beadon Street was fulfilled with the foundation of Maharaja Manindra Chandra College at 20, Ramkanto Bose Street , Kolkata- 700 003. Initially the college started with about one hundred students on its roll with History (General) and other departments.Dr. Panchanan Neogi was appointed Principal of the college. Sri Tridibnath Roy was the first professor of the Department. Affiliation in History (Honours)was started from 1954-55 academic session.
The aim and objective of the Department of History is to develop the intellectual breadth, the analytical skill of the students and to develop interest in research. With a blend of rigorous academic training and a spirit of inquiry, the department strives to instill in students a deep appreciation for history as both an intellectual discipline and a guide to contemporary society.
The department has faculty strength of three Associate Professors, one Assistant Professor and one SACT. The faculty members are committed to both teaching and mentoring.
The department organizes parent teacher meetings for the development of the academic environment for the students and also to inform guardians about their wards education.
The department regularly organizes
- interdisciplinary student seminars,
- educational excursion to historical sites, museums and archives,
- Student projects to encourage research and analytical skills.
The department published a departmental magazine named Bartika.
Beyond the classroom History students are encouraged to participate in heritage and cultural activities, collaborate in departmental publications and contribute to preserving and interpreting the past in meaningful ways.
