Teachers Profile
About
The degree science department in this college was formally inaugurated on July 21st, 1957 by Dr. Nirmal Kumar Siddhanta, the then Vice-chancellor of C.U. It was the endeavour of Dr. Anil Chandra Bannerjee, the then Principal which made it possible. The Honours course in Chemistry started from the session 1961-1962. Many eminent teachers enriched the Department with their skill and brilliance. The sincerity and diligence helped the students to perform well in University and other examinations. We only humbly follow their foot marks.
Best Practices
1. Title of the Practice
Academic Enrichment, Student Support, and Research Orientation in Chemistry
2. Objectives of the Practice
To provide quality chemical education through innovative teaching–learning methods.
To enhance practical and laboratory skills with emphasis on safety and green chemistry practices.
To encourage student participation in academic seminars, webinars, and research-based activities.
To promote student support and inclusivity through scholarships, mentorship, and remedial classes.
To instill values of academic integrity, ethics, and sustainability in chemical education.
3. The Context
The Department of Chemistry caters to students from diverse socio-economic and educational backgrounds. While some students have strong foundations, others require academic and motivational support. The department also faces challenges of limited resources, which calls for innovative practices, external collaborations, and structured student mentoring.
4. The Practice
The following practices are systematically adopted:
A. Teaching–Learning and Academic Enrichment
Use of ICT-enabled teaching (PowerPoint, simulations, and multimedia demonstrations).
Regular departmental seminars, webinars, and student presentations (e.g., VISION Webinar Series).
Bridge/remedial courses for first-year students to strengthen fundamental concepts.
B. Laboratory Practices
Well-equipped laboratories with periodic upgradation.
Safety protocols: regular demonstrations, safety posters, and provision of protective gear.
Promotion of green chemistry and safe disposal of laboratory waste.
C. Student Support
Scholarship for Meritorious Students instituted by the Departmental Reunion Committee and by Vision.
Mentor–mentee system: each student is guided by a faculty mentor for academic and career progression.
Special counselling and remedial sessions for academically weaker students.
D. Research and Exposure
Encouragement of student participation in research-oriented discussions and paper presentations.
Faculties have been involved in several GOI funded projects (UGC, DST)
Faculty involvement in research publications and dissemination of outcomes in class.
Organization of industrial visits / institutional field trips whenever possible.
E. Institutional Linkages and Student Welfare
Active participation in institutional mechanisms such as Grievance Redressal Cell, POSH Cell, Gender Sensitization Committee.
Guidance for availing scholarships, internships, and higher education opportunities.
5. Evidence of Success
Increased student participation in webinars and departmental events.
Awarding of scholarships to meritorious students has motivated better academic performance.
Positive feedback from students on mentoring and remedial classes.
Department faculty publications affiliated with the college.
High success rate of graduates pursuing higher studies and competitive examinations.
6. Problems Encountered and Resources Required
Limited availability of advanced laboratory instruments.
Need for more funded undergraduate research projects.
Financial constraints faced by some students in accessing external academic resources.
Requirement of additional space for ICT-enabled classrooms and specialized laboratories.
7. Future Plans
Introduction of a formal research internship programme in collaboration with universities and industries.
Expansion of green chemistry practices and development of a departmental sustainability policy.
Establishment of a departmental research and innovation cell for undergraduate students.
Increasing the number of academic–industry linkages for internships and placements.
